Mixed Media
The beginnings of my experiments in mixed media seemed a natural extension of my work on wood. Now, rather than carving into, or building onto the surface, I selected materials that introduced inherently interesting qualities. Velvet was my favourite. Not only did its association with junk art or kitsch tie into my exploration of pop culture, but it presented a sumptuous base upon which to work. Depending on the fabric's nap, the material would either absorb, or reflect light. That richness, in concert with gold or silver leaf, brought an elegance not always congruent with my choice of subject. And that conflict imbued the work with an interesting energy.

Painting on macaroni simply seemed like a fun idea. Although reasonably successful, it appeared to have reached the apex of its popularity with the pack of mice that ate one of the delicious pictures.
